This is the old church in Roundfort where, presumably, Margaret Hynes is buried in the family paddock.  (Click on the image to make it larger).

Margaret’s parrish church
Each family had a paddock (an enclosed area) in the this old church yard where family members were buried in common – there was usually no money for stones.  According to the South Mayo heritage center, aside from Willie’s stone in the new graveyard, there are no other known stones for his family members.  This despite the letter’s mention that Margaret would be buried with Willie (though she is not listed on the stone) and her mention that she has put up a plain stone for Pat.  It is possible that Willie’s mother Margaret, his father, and his older brother Patrick are in unmarked graves in this church yard.

There is however a large marker in this old graveyard for the mother and other relatives of May Hynes.  May is probably a relative of Margaret’s.  In 2017 May is still living in a 2 room cottage within a half mile of the ruins of Margaret’s cottage.

Our Hynes family paddock, which would have been in the part of the churchyard that was outside and to the left of the front door (visible under the window in the front wall of the church, would have been on a slope overlooking the valley.  See also other pictures noted in the links below.
